Description

This 12-1/2-by-9-inch oval dish with 2-inch straight sides bakes an earthy potato and mushroom gratin entrée for three to four or a pair of small stuffed eggplants with the ideal heat conduction for a superbly executed recipe. An exquisite specimen of fine French pottery, this porcelain baker is simple in appearance with its milky white color, smooth finish, and rolled edges yet durable due to its proprietary time-tested ingredients and thick-walled construction. The baker's pristine beauty and excellent heat retention make it a wonderful serving vessel that goes from oven to table, and its plain design is certain to blend with all dinnerware, from casual and modern to formal and vintage. Family-founded in 1818, the Pillivuyt porcelain factory still employs skilled artisans who use the original time-honored traditions of handcrafting each piece. Replacement molds are all handmade by craftspeople who have spent many years in training, and who shape them to the level of perfection that this superior bakeware requires. The result is a tough porcelain base that can withstand temperature extremes, making this baker safe to move among the oven, freezer, microwave, or broiler. And, with a little liquid in the baker, the pan can even be placed over a diffused flame on the stovetop. All pieces are glazed and fired at temperatures of about 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, which produces a non-porous, rock-hard finish that easily cleans up by hand or in the dishwasher. The lead-free glaze is resistant to crazing and staining and won't absorb food odors or flavors. --Cristina Vaamonde

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Functional
KBranford

We own several other Pillivuyt bakeware pieces, but this is the first oval baking dish that we added to our collection. As with all of the Pillivuyt products that we own, the quality and craftsmanship of this piece is impeccable - Pillivuyt's porcelain really is every bit as beautiful as it is functional. We just used this baking dish for the first time last weekend, and I can say that the apple and pear crisp that we baked in it came out better than it ever has before! The baker heats gently and evenly, and despite the baked on mess that was left behind (not just from baking, but we also reheated the apple and pear crisp in this dish several times in the oven), all it took was some soap and warm water to get the baker clean again - no hard scrubbing, and no prolonged soaking...clean up was an absolute breeze! I have to say, I was not expecting that, so it was a pleasant surprise!Another added benefit is that this piece can go directly from the oven to the table, and looks beautiful when used for serving. We're saving up to add to our Pillivuyt collection, and would love to buy another one of these bakers - the size is very practical, and incredibly useful. I know the pieces can be expensive, but it really is an investment - when you cook as much as we do, the enjoyment that you get out of using equipment that you love really is worth it...not to mention the fact that these pieces should last for many, many years :-)
