Description

This 14-1/2-by-10-1/2-inch oval dish with 2-1/8-inch straight sides bakes a filling gratin entrée for six or a dinner of sausage-stuffed shells with the ideal heat conduction for a superbly executed recipe. An exquisite specimen of fine French pottery, this porcelain baker is simple in appearance with its milky white color, smooth finish, and rolled edges yet durable due to its proprietary time-tested ingredients and thick-walled construction. The baker's pristine beauty and excellent heat retention make it a wonderful serving vessel that goes from oven to table, and its plain design is certain to blend with all dinnerware, from casual and modern to formal and vintage. Family-founded in 1818, the Pillivuyt porcelain factory still employs skilled artisans who use the original time-honored traditions of handcrafting each piece. Replacement molds are all handmade by craftspeople who have spent many years in training, and who shape them to the level of perfection that this superior bakeware requires. The result is a tough porcelain base that can withstand temperature extremes, making this baker safe to move among the oven, freezer, microwave, or broiler. And, with a little liquid in the baker, the pan can even be placed over a diffused flame on the stovetop. All pieces are glazed and fired at temperatures of about 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, which produces a non-porous, rock-hard finish that easily cleans up by hand or in the dishwasher. The lead-free glaze is resistant to crazing and staining and won't absorb food odors or flavors. --Cristina Vaamonde

5 out of 5 stars Impressive bakeware

I love the size and weight of this oval baker. I have other Pillivuyt bakeware and as always very satisfied with the quality. I am currently trying to upgrade all of my bakeware by slowly replacing each piece as I can afford to do so, since Pillivuyt is a bit pricey. But I am happy to say that so far I've been impressed with the way it performs. It's durable, bakes everything evenly and is easy to clean. It also retains its original luster which is quite attractive. Another positive aspect is that it does not contain any lead or cadmium, so for me that's well worth the extra money.

I found my first Pillivuyt dish some 30 years ago and love using these products since then. I do like to entertain and their white hard porcelain oven - and serving ware goes very well with my blue and white china - as well as with Pilliyuyt's green and gold Bistro china. The quality is extremely durable, made out of thick non porous porcelain with a beautiful lead free glaze. I do think the porcelain is indeed very easy to clean. For sticky burns I just have to soak it with a drop of dishwashing liquid and that's about it. After some 30 minutes I am able to rinse the roaster / baker and wipe it clean. My other favorite items from Pillivuyt are:Pillivuyt Porcelain Large 3-Quart, 14-1/2-by-8-1/2-Inch Rectangular Baker, great for Lasagne, as well as the Pillivuyt Porcelain Small 3-Cup, 9-1/2-by-5-Inch Rectangular Baker, I have several mainly for appetizer dishes and I use them for serving too.Pillivuyt Standard Bowl 15 oz. I cannot work in the kitchen without these bowls - are they my good luck bowls? We use them for cereal, ice cream, soup bowl, food preparation, dip serving bowl and leftover keeper.
