I looked at these for several weeks in my search for two 1-1.5qt capacity covered 'bowls' that could go in the oven/micro for warming leftovers in individual bowls for hubby and me. Not always enough of one leftover meal for both of us, a set of 2 lidded bowls that would serve for covered storage, heating and eating was my goal. I was looking for small casserole-type bowls that are easy to use & clean and that I could store the leftovers in, slide the bowls in the frig and then reheat in those same bowls either in the oven or microwave.I tried my hardest to figure out the dimensions and/or capacity of these bowls, but that information wasn't anywhere I looked: not even on Corningware's website. However, knowing the very next size up in this same shaped lidded bowl was 1.5qt, I figured these had to be a bit smaller - probably 1-qt, which would have been perfect. Don't be fooled by the dimensions listed in the product description. I was. At 8.2 x 5.6 x 3.4 as listed, I figured they were exactly what I wanted and needed. I was going to order 2-3 sets but then ordered only 1 set to be sure they were what I thought they were. Whew! Thank goodness I didn't order more. Those dimensions listed that make these appear as if they are about 8" x 5" each and maybe 3" high??? Well, those are the dimensions of the entire set of two as they are packaged together in cardboard and taped together. Cut those dimensions in half and you have two white Corningware 'ramekins' with flared sides and the capacity of each is only 2/3 Cup. These can't even be used as candy dishes - they are pretty useless for any serious work/use in the kitchen and a teense too deep to be used as a spoon rest. Ladies - you'll understand what I mean when I say that these are the size of those inexpensive trinket boxes found in those vacation 'souvenir' stores that are a dime a dozen. The bowls are not cheap - but their size makes them pretty useless for anything other than dropping your rings/earrings at day's end. I honestly have no idea how I will put these to use. Maybe a few pickles or olives during a meal but with just the two of us at the table, why bother with more dishes? If used as a jelly-jar, they aren't deep enough to keep the serving spoon in place and the jelly spoon keeps falling onto the tablecloth. Cotton-tipped swabs don't fit, cotton balls do fit - about 5-6 of the regular sized ones. If you're into those huge cottonballs, triple-sized, maybe 3 if ya squish 'em down and get the lid on before they fluff back up. And speaking of the lids, they don't 'sit' as they should either. A bit rocky and 'off'. They don't fit snugly into the oval well where they should without some serious concentration and multiple adjustments.Edit - 11/14/12 - I've kept these on the counter so whatever I happened to have in hand at the time, I could try it in these bowls. In addition to the cotton balls, swabs and jelly mentioned above, I've tried sugar packets, tea bags (individually wrapped as well as naked tea bags), sea salt, sugar in the raw (both harden, stick and spill because the lids are loose). What DID finally work? Hershey kisses. About 30 of them randomly tossed in. If the lid isn't going to be used, more would definitely fit as well as other varieties of smaller candy. So I guess they will work as small candy dishes for some, but not in this house. With our 6 Greyhounds, open candy dishes scattered around the house would be too tempting to them and quite insane of me. For now, my little corningware lidded dishes will have to be content with holding my earrings at the end of the day. :(
